It’s time we openly talk about cellulite. Affecting over 90 percent of women worldwide, cellulite is something the majority of us deal with. So why is there such a negative stigma around it?
Although cellulite is so common, many women find it hard not to feel ashamed about it. A 2013 study had women with and without cellulite rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 10. On average, the women with cellulite rated themselves lower than those without—97 percent of them even said they would change a part of their bodies if they could. With thousands of airbrushed photos bombarding our screens and pages on a daily basis, it’s hard not to feel self conscious of your cellulite.
You may be wondering, what causes cellulite anyway? Is it my weight? My diet? My genetics? Well, the answer is all of the above. Cellulite affects women of all ages, shapes, sizes and backgrounds. Although it can also affect some men, cellulite is a predominantly female condition. This is due to the way fat cells, muscle and connective tissue are distributed throughout a woman’s body compared to a man’s. There are a few factors that may contribute to the onset of cellulite, such as becoming pregnant, increased weight gain, or a high-carb diet. However, it can happen to anyone at any time.
To understand how cellulite happens, you need to look at how the skin is attached to the body. The collagen layer of skin (dermis) sits above your body’s layer of fat and is attached by small connective tethers. It is when these tethers loosen that the layer of fat underneath starts to push and distort the connective tissue, creating what is often described as the “cottage cheese” like appearance that cellulite creates. Although we are often made to feel as though this dimpled effect on our skin is not normal, it’s important to remember that it is. As we grow older, our bodies are constantly shifting and developing. It is only natural that the texture of our skin will start to change over time. Next time you’re feeling self conscious about your cellulite, just remember: no one is perfect and nearly all of the women in the world deal with this same condition.
With recent social media campaigns from Aerie (which has chosen not to airbrush any of their models of all shape and size) and from Kaitlyn Bristowe (who started the hashtag #Realstagram), we are so empowered that cellulite is becoming more visible in our feeds and ads. Most of us deal with it, so why be ashamed?!
