The dreaded orange peel-like texture that can develop around your thighs and butt has many misconceptionsone of the most common being cellulite is caused by being overweight. Over 90 percent of women deal with it in their lifetime yet many of us don’t know what actually causes it.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a topographic skin change that occurs in most post-pubertal females. Whether they are thin or overweight. It presents as a modification of skin topography evident by skin dimpling and nodularity that occurs mainly in women. In the pelvic region, lower limbs, and abdomen, and is caused by the herniation of subcutaneous fat within the fibrous connective tissue. Leading to a padded or orange peel–like appearance. This occurs in women of all ages and tends to become more visible with age as over time the skin loses its thickness and thereby enhances the visibility of the unsightly cellulite bumps

Cellulite gets worse with age.

As hormones play a central role in cellulite. When we age the reduction in estrogen production causes poor circulation. Which leads to a decrease in collagen production and the breakdown of connective tissue.

Cellulite is more common for women.

Only 10 percent of men experience cellulite which is extremely low compared the over 90 percent of women. Women tend to carry more weight than men in the buttocks and hips which are both prone. Male connective tissue also has extra support. To keep fat tissue in place and reduce the orange peel-like appearance.

Cellulite is genetic.

If you have smooth-skinned relatives and grandparentsrejoice! There is a genetic test on the market to help determine your likelihood of developing cellulite based on your genetics. But keep in mind other factors such as exercise and diet also play a role.

What cures cellulite?

Until a few years ago. Questionable at-home remedies were the only way to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Practices like scrubbing with a dry brush before showing. Was the only hope women had to rid themselves of cottage-cheese thighs. No topical creams or products are clinically proven to reduce fat. There are three classifications of cellulite: class one has no spontaneous dimpling but is pinch test positive for dimpling; class two shows spontaneous dimpling while standing, and class three shows spontaneous dimpling while standing and lying down. Thankfully, today’s technology allows us to reduce the appearance without question. At Elegance Sculpting we trust the power of Syneron Candela’s VelaShape III to non-invasively reduce cellulite in just a few sessions.
