Is my acne hormonal and how do I treat it?

What is hormonal acne?

While hormonal acne is not a term used by doctors, it has been adopted by magazines and skincare companies to describe acne linked to hormonal changes.

One of the four main causes of acne is an excess production of hormone testosterone during puberty; however, the painful blemishes of hormone acne can last far longer than high school.  With testosterone increasing sebum production at the base of hair follicles, blemishes linked to testosterone are usually deep rooted and can be painful.

Testosterone is not the only hormone at play with hormonal acne. Estrogen levels changing with pregnancy, menopause or the menstrual cycle can also cause hormonal acne.

So how do we know if acne is hormonal or just maskne?

How to determine if your blemishes are hormonal?

Typically hormonal acne takes the form of cyst bumps which are deep under the skin however, the location of hormonal acne changes with age. During puberty years, hormonal acne usually occurs in the T-zone but as we head into adult acne years, hormonal acne moves primarily to the jawline.Hormonal acne is not always in the form of cystswhiteheads, blackheads and even small pimples can all be classified under the umbrella.

When determining if your blemishes are hormonal ask yourself the following:

  • Are your blemishes around the chin and jawline?
  • Are you stressed?
  • You’re getting painful cysts?
  • Are you getting bad breakouts occur once a month?

How to treat hormonal acne?

When you have a hormonal breakout, your first instinct might be to lay on the spot treatments with the latest drugstore but that is not always the answer.

Oral contraceptives may be necessary to combat hormonal acne. Anti-androgen drugs such as spironolactone can help reduce the male hormones that can contribute to excess oil production. If your hormonal acne is mild, consider including a retinoid in your skincare. Always consult your family doctor before considering new medications.
