You are not alone—here’s exactly how to treat (and prevent!) maskne.
What is maskne?
For decades, maskne has been experienced by medical professionals but has become popularized by the masses during the coronavirus outbreak in 2020.
Maskne is more than acne caused by wearing a mask. Often wearing masks for an extended period of time can cause friction and irritation that can appear more like contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis or hives.
While maskne can impact anyone, it often affects those with preexisting skin concerns. Everything from oily skin to rosacea can flare up due to wearing a mask for extended periods of time.
How can maskne be prevented?
If possible, avoid wearing makeup or sunscreen while wearing a mask for long periods of time and carry face wipes for regular cleansing.
Finding the right mask for your skin and lifestyle is also extremely important. We recommend 100% cotton masks as they are extremely breathable and less likely to trap in sweat.
If you are wearing a mask while working out or any other physical activity you might opt for a performance mask with an antimicrobial layer (we love the Sportsmask by Under Armour).
And while this may be obvious, wash your mask daily! We see many people reusing disposable masks day after day, which only aggoratives the skin more. Think about it, you are putting on a dirty mask with yesterday’s makeup, sweat and dead skin cells.
Despite best efforts, for many maskne is simply inevitable in 2020. So let’s talk about maskne solutions.
How can maskne be treated?
We recommend consulting your family doctor or dermatologist for severe maskne and acne concerns. Sometimes in addition to topical treatments, an oral perception is necessary to balance hormones and fight the acne from the inside out.
As for topical treatments, we swear by HydraFacials for instant results. HydraFacials are the smartphone of facials, each customizable and using the latest technology.
Each HydraFacial is composed of three steps: cleanse and peel; extract and hydrate; and fuse and protect. The unique technology literally sucks the dead skin cells, blackheads, dirt and bacteria out of the pores for instantly clearer skin.
Depending on your skin concerns, HydraFacials may be customized with a Britnol, Dermabuilder or the Growth Factor Treatment.
