Taking the plunge and finally getting laser hair removal will be one of the best decisions of your life— just think about it, no longer having to shave, wax or pluck the rest of your life. Get the most out of your laser hair removal treatments with these simple guidelines.

By combining our advanced Syneron Candela’s Elos Plus technology with our what to do before laser hair removal tips, you can ensure you get the most effective and comfortable hair removal experience.

1) Avoid sun exposure

Like any laser treatment, sun exposure must be avoided as much as possible before, and after each session. Direct contact with sunlight should be limited or eliminated throughout the entire process. If you are unable to avoid direct sunlight to the treatment area, apply SPF of at least 30 or higher constantly. During laser sessions, the skin becomes extra sensitive to the sun’s harsh UV rays.

2) Stick to shaving

In the six weeks leading up to your first treatment don’t pluck or wax the the areas you’re looking to treat, as this will remove the root of the hair follicle. Laser hair removal works to attack and eliminate these roots, so keeping them intact is necessary for an effective treatment. To manage any unwanted hair before and during the time between treatments, stick to shaving only. You will notice after each session you will have to shave less and less, until no hair is left.

3) Skip your morning coffee

Any kind of caffeine, whether it a cup of coffee or a fizzy soda, should be avoided 24 hours before your treatment time. Caffeine can make the body agitated and tense, which can make your laser hair removal uncomfortable. To ensure your nerves are calm and relaxed, make sure to get plenty of rest and switch to an herbal tea (just for one day, we promise).

4) Clear the area

To ensure your technician has a clear working space (any exposed hair will burn when in contact with the laser), we recommend shaving the day before your laser hair removal appointment. Shaving helps spurs the hair into the active growing stage, which is the only stage the laser is able to target and destroy follicles. Of course, you’ll need multiple sessions to truly target each stage of the hair growth cycle.

5) Arrive squeaky clean

Right before you leave for your treatment we recommend taking a quick shower to wash off any dirt, oil, or makeup from the areas about to be treated. Although your laser technician will sanitize the area before lasering, taking the extra few minutes to do this will make for a cleaner, quicker treatment. Also avoid applying moisturizer before treatment as the extra oils will make skin slippery and hard to work with. A cooling gel will be provided.
